Apex Government Services is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Senior Payroll Specialist to join our dynamic finance team in Washington, DC. As a key member of our HR department, you will ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll for a diverse workforce of over 500 employees. Responsibilities
- Manage the full-cycle payroll process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness for all employees, including salaried, hourly, and exempt staff.
- Maintain strict compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, with specific emphasis on District of Columbia tax laws.
- Prepare and file monthly and quarterly payroll tax reports (941, 940, state returns) and manage year-end W-2 and 1099 processing.
- Collaborate with the benefits team to ensure accurate deductions for health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
- Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, garnishments, and employee inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform regular audits of payroll records and bank reconciliations to ensure data accuracy.
- Train and mentor junior payroll staff and cross-train other finance team members on payroll systems.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in payroll administration, preferably within the government or consulting sector.
- Strong working knowledge of federal and District of Columbia payroll tax laws and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., ADP Workforce Now, Paychex, or Ceridian) and HRIS systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and v-lookups.
- Excellent analytical skills with a high attention to detail and a focus on accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive employee information discreetly.
- Professional certification (e.g., CPP, PHR, or SHRM-CP) is a plus.
